MaRCo: Machine Remote Control

MaRCo is part of the EUTECT software environment and makes the machine control of EUTECT’s selective soldering systems mobile. Because MaRCo helps our customers to set up freely configurable interfaces for the use of the machine control via a mobile device. In doing so, various machine parameters can be controlled and displayed::

The EUTECT factor

The EUTECT factor is a non-material product from our company that is anchored in all our systems and modules. Some say it is the German “Schwäbische Tüftlergeist” (Swabian inventive spirit). For us, it is rather added values that are not simply generated by hardware and software, but are simply based on innovative ideas. It is the characteristics of our products that contribute to making the EUTECT soldering process efficient and reliable. These include parameters such as minimized production costs, plus low cycle times and downtimes. To achieve these parameters, we invest time, ideas and creativity to ultimately generate the EUTECT factor.

Retrofit solution for higher machine availability

In order to increase the machine availability for existing machines in the market, Eutect GmbH offers its customers a comprehensive retrofit solution, which increases the availability of Eutect machines by up to 10% and allows to reach the operational readiness after service and maintenance operations twice as fast.

Our retrofit solutions include an update of our SoFa software family as well as the hardware control components. When installing the updates, a complete data backup is performed. With this data backup, a test system is set up at Eutect, in which all updates and adjustments are carried out. Only after extensive tests, the new versions are transferred to the customer systems.

Eutect GmbH, specialist for selective soldering in the electronics industry, and Butter & Salt tech marketing GmbH are participating in SMTconnect 2023 with a joint stand. Trade visitors can find out more about efficient solutions for assembly and connection technology at the Eutect stand. B2B marketing and communication specialist Butter and Salt, on the other hand, will offer detailed insights into technical marketing in electronics manufacturing.

At SMTconnect, Eutect presents selective soldering processes, such as mini wave and laser soldering, which are used in a variety of manufacturing processes, such as the IW1 or IW1-2 selective solder waves, which guarantee a soldering process free of oxides and residues with the inert gas atmosphere. The solder wave, which is continuously pumped by an induction pump, transfers the heat from the solder melt homogeneously and circumferentially to the solder joint geometry. The flowing solder wave cleans the solder joint from excess flux residues, oxides and contamination.

Another soldering process presented is laser soldering, which allows fast and contactless energy input. In addition to mini wave and laser soldering, Eutect also has a wide range of modules for assembly and connection technology in its portfolio. For more than 15 years, the digital EUTECT modular system has presented the entire module range of machine solutions for selective soldering processes. Ultimately, it is the customer’s task that determines the choice of the optimum connection, automation or software module. The experts offer the modules that are optimally suited for a task in terms of process technology and economy and combine proven stand-alone, rotary transfer or inline production concepts into complete solutions.

In addition, they have increasingly developed and optimised modules in recent years in order to reduce the consumption data of electricity, compressed air, nitrogen or other consumables and to be able to minimise maintenance and service efforts. “Only through these measures will industrial production be able to remain competitive in the international market. Therefore, we constantly optimise our individual modules to be able to guarantee our customers a highly efficient process system,” says Matthias Fehrenbach, Managing Director of Eutect GmbH. At the same time, it is important to communicate corresponding optimisations, processes and new products in a way that is appropriate for the target group. “Reason enough to point out the possibilities offered by technical marketing with a joint trade fair appearance,” emphasises Florian Schildein, Managing Partner of Butter and Salt tech marketing GmbH.

Butter and Salt tech marketing implements extensive measures for various companies in the electronics manufacturing industry on a daily basis. This requires a lot of experience and technical interest, because technical marketing is only comparable to other marketing disciplines to a limited extent. Knowledge of the specific communication channels is usually not enough to market current and future technical products and services. Rather, what is required is a central point of contact that is characterised by a high level of technical understanding. “Because we speak the language of the customers and know their products, our portfolio includes pinpoint, clearly defined and efficient marketing measures,” Schildein emphasises the extensive marketing tools that customers can access directly. In addition, the experts have developed their own platforms. For example, Butter and Salt informs developers and designers about new ideas, modern technologies and future concepts with the Future Supplier Hub information portal based on specific contributions from the fields of electronics, automation & robotics, IT & software, mechanical engineering, sustainable production and metal processing. Another innovative tool of our own is the Pink Flamingo document management system. It allows machine operators and production managers direct digital access to machine-specific maintenance manuals, operating instructions, maintenance protocols and other documents by means of a QR code. In addition, the tool can be individually configured for each machine supplier and each machine and provided with defined access rights.

Eutect and Butter and Salt will be exhibiting at SMTconnect in Nuremberg from 9 to 11 May in Hall 4, Stand 121.

As an expert in assembly and connection technology with clever, modular soldering automation, EUTECT also represents the transformation in the e-mobility sector. At Coiltech, in March 2023, the company presented its solutions to a large expert audience. Around 3,000 international visitors were welcomed at the trade fair, which took place at the Augsburg Exhibition Centre.

The Coiltech trade fair is an industry meeting place that includes machines, materials, techniques and test equipment for the production of electric motors, generators, transformers and e-mobility solutions with various degrees of specialisation.

Fehrenbach and his team presented processes and mini wave modules from the field of enamelled copper wire soldering. EUTECT’s soldering processes are used by companies worldwide in a variety of manufacturing processes, whether in modern battery production for e-mobility applications or in the manufacture of key less-go, park distance or smart light products in vehicles.

Messestand der EUTECT GmbH auf der Coiltech 2023

Due to the high packaging densities and the ever-increasing miniaturisation, solder joints are becoming smaller and smaller. Precise soldering processes are therefore indispensable to obtain high-quality solder joints. In order to achieve these goals, controlled production processes are necessary, because only if the technology also knows how the process behaves at the solder joint can a precise solder joint be produced. At EUTECT, innovative and globally unique technologies such as the EUTECT wire feeder SWF are used for this purpose on the one hand, and on the other hand, data is collected using a wide range of sensors and pyrometers. This data is read out in real time, processed and executed in time in the soldering process by means of the EUTECT control technology.

The EUTECT laser soldering process, for example, operates in a completely closed control loop. Due to the force- and path-controlled wire feed in combination with a pyrometer coaxially mirrored through the laser optics and a camera for process visualisation, the user knows exactly what is happening during the soldering process and the system can independently readjust various parameters.

Only at EUTECT: digital availability of machine documentation and operating instructions

Every module and every machine leaves our premises with its own QR code. This is attached in at least two easily accessible places. The operating instructions and other machine documents are hidden behind this code. Although these are sent with the machine, they are often quickly lost in day-to-day business. As the operating instructions are also highly individualised due to the high degree of customisation of our machines, each machine has its own documents. By scanning the QR code, operators, service staff and supervisors have access to the corresponding, most up-to-date version of the operating instructions at any time. In addition, the QR code and the associated information hub offer further possibilities to use EUTECT’s service digitally, such as scheduler for maintenance and service calls, training module, digital maintenance logging or access to remote support.

EMI: EUTECT Machine Interface

EMI is responsible for the movement in the soldering system and includes different functions that are responsible for the use of the axes and robots.

With the product management DAT editor, for example, products can be created, edited, copied and deleted. Furthermore, the DAT editor is used to assign products to workpiece carrier codes. The sequence programs (DAT, RC & NC) are also displayed. The administration of jobs and the lot height control as well as the input of manual jobs are also carried out via this software solution.

Another module is the JobCreator, with which jobs can be edited graphically (Touch & Move).  This means that the operator can add new points and lines and edit them further. Various parameters, such as the X, Y, Z positions plus two additional axes, the rotary (D) and infeed axes €, the plunge in & out speed, the traverse speed, the dwell time (process time or process parameters), the index (sequence), the MFN (multiple move – a job can be executed repeatedly shifted in X, Y, and Z) are also created and adjusted with the JobCreator.

The additional Teachmode allows to move to selected coordinates (X,Y,Z,D,E) to correct and take over current axis positions or to add new elements to the job from current position.

Together with its partner company TAKTOMAT Kurvengesteuerte Antriebssysteme GmbH, the German specialist for selective soldering in the electronics industry is taking part in Global Industrie, France’s leading trade fair for developments and solutions for modern mobility. At the four-day trade fair, Eutect will present soldering modules and innovative solutions that are already widely used in vehicle development and production.

“The Global Industrie trade fair has distinguished itself in recent years by presenting innovations that have led to increased efficiency in manufacturing. This year, however, the main focus is on finding solutions to the current issues surrounding the topic of solutions for sustainable manufacturing in a complex international situation. For this reason, we have decided to participate in a trade fair in France for the first time”, explains Matthias Fehrenbach, Managing Director of Eutect GmbH. The Global Industrie will take place from 07 to 10 March in Lyon. Fehrenbach and his team will be exhibiting solutions from the field of miniwave and laser soldering at the joint stand. “Our soldering processes are used by companies worldwide in a wide range of manufacturing processes, whether in modern battery production for e-mobility applications or in the production of Key less-Go, Park Distance or Smart light products in vehicles. Our machine concepts are also used in the household goods, industrial automation, aerospace and control technology sectors as well as in the energy sector for the production of reliable electronics,” Fehrenbach continues.

The solder wave, which is continuously pumped by an induction pump, transfers the heat from the molten solder homogeneously to the solder joint geometry. The flowing solder wave cleans the solder joint from excess flux residues, oxides and contamination. The second soldering process presented is laser soldering. This enables a fast and contactless energy input. Since 2008, Eutect has been offering its customers the world’s only 100% closed-loop laser soldering technology. Closed loop means that the process is not only controlled, it reacts and adapts to the different soldering tasks, geometries and surfaces through the unique Eutect control technology. With the help of an integrated pyrometer, it is possible to control the laser power via the process surface temperature. In this way, solder wires, solder pastes, solder rings, preforms and other joining materials can be processed. Various optics and galvo scanner techniques enable the processing of a wide range of geometries.

In addition to mini wave and laser soldering, Eutect offers a wide range of modules for assembly and joining technology. For more than 15 years, the digital EUTECT modular system has presented the entire range of modules that make up the machine solutions for selective soldering processes. Ultimately, the customer’s task determines the choice of the optimum connection, automation or software module.

“Based on the task at hand, we select the modules that are optimal in terms of process technology and economy in order to combine proven stand-alone, rotary transfer or inline production concepts into complete solutions. In addition, we have increasingly developed and optimised modules in recent years in order to reduce consumption data with regard to electricity, compressed air, nitrogen or other consumables. At the same time, we have minimised maintenance and service costs in order to achieve further cost reductions for our customers. We are convinced that this is the only way industrial production can remain competitive in the international market,” Fehrenbach explains.

Material bottlenecks and imprecise delivery dates have caused stress in recent months not only on the purchasing side, but also in the daily production of electronic assemblies. Due to second source products or new suppliers, it is necessary to adjust the process parameters of individual production steps. Good news for those who can rely on a machine supplier with a high level of process expertise.

“There is no end to the requests for process optimization,” emphasizes Elmar Hölz, head of process development and optimization at the selective soldering specialist Eutect GmbH. “In some cases, we are approached by customers who have selected a new supplier for printed circuit boards, for example, after several years. This is partly necessary due to price developments, but is also based on market-related material and supply problems. However, after the change of supplier, the quality of the end product is often no longer right, which in most cases is due to changes in product properties and dimensions,” explains Hölz. In these cases, the process specialists of Eutect GmbH take over the adaptation of the parameters to the new production conditions. In some cases, this also applies to systems that do not originate from their company. “The need at electronics manufacturers is often great, especially when the order books are full,” says Lars Iwers, sales representative at Eutect GmbH.

Some of these process optimizations are very complex. For example, Hölz recalls a production process in which a Hall sensor was to be soldered onto a circuit board. In addition to the different assembly variants, the different lengths of the circuit boards were also a challenge. Furthermore, the unpopulated PCBs were purchased from different suppliers. “As a result, each board suddenly had a different quality, which is why the soldering parameters had to be adjusted in each case,” recalls Hölz. Moreover, the process expert first had to find this out in a first step. After all, the origin of the quality problems was initially unclear.

Since soldering results of the same quality were to be achieved for all assemblies, new soldering parameters had to be determined for the different qualities of the boards provided by different suppliers. This resulted in the necessity to write and implement new soldering programs. Since the errors occurred as a result of different variants and qualities, a particularly high level of experience and know-how in soldering process technology was required here. As a result, the error rate was reduced from an average of 9% to 0-0.7% after Hölz adjusted the process parameters. “However, the boards originally used can still be soldered without any problems today without adjusting the parameters,” says Hölz.
